The Des Moines Register

It's hard to believe Ryan "Da Younger" Haynes only catapulted into his hip-hop career last April.

The 27-year-old from Des Moines hit the ground running, though — spending his year snagging opening slots for famed rappers the likes of 2 Chainz and Waka Flocka Flame, as well as appearing at 515 Alive Music Festival, Fresh Fest and the Biggz Big World breast cancer fundraiser.

"I'm shootin' in the dark right now," he joked. "Hopin' that I'm makin' all them shots, you know?"

And, so far, he's hitting the target. In May, the Valley High School graduate — who moved from Chicago to Des Moines in 2006 — released his debut mixtape, "Scriptures," a 13-song effort that boasts bold and boisterous proclamations from the emcee.

The album's single, "Hot Boy," a club-ready modern rap track Haynes described as "summertime vibin'," has racked up nearly 75,000 plays on Facebook, while the title track — a six-and-half-minute effort with opening line, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of divided states/America was never united/we are designed to hate" — shows the artist's sobering side.

"'Scriptures,' it gives you a more in-depth side of Da Younger," Haynes said. "It gives you a side that (shows) there's knowledge; there's inspiration; there's hope. That I have a vision and I want you to see my vision."

Haynes plans to release his new studio effort, a self-titled album, this winter. It's going to be introspective, he said, giving listeners more of what was introduced on "Scriptures."

"The name of the album speaks for itself, 'Da Younger,'" he said. "If you don't really know me … you goin' get me — uncut, uncovered."

His goal with the release? "To give everybody who doesn't have the opportunity to speak a voice through me," he said. "There might be something that's in your heart that you might not have the (guts) to say. But I can go behind the mic and say it and stand behind it and have you right there saying "Hey, this is us. We're here. This is the movement and this is what we stand for."

UrbanCity Magazine

Da Younger was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 13th, 1990. He moved to Iowa in 2006 where he graduated from Valley High School in 2009.

Da Younger had some troubled teen years that eventually sent him to prison where he was sentenced to a mandatory 17 years, but the courts over turned his sentence on an appeal 3 yrs later due to a wrongful conviction, and insufficient evidence.

After hitting rock bottom, Da Younger finally decided he was going to change his life and do what he knew best, which was music. He started playing the piano at the age of 10. Da Younger said, “I never knew how to read music but I could always hear it for some reason and learn to play by ear. “I got started sneaking and playing the piano after church and wen school was over tryna impress da girls on some look wat I can do type ish until i really started slapping dem keys for real”

Da Younger hit the music scene 7 months ago and has been working nonstop ever since. He partnered up with his manager, Porsche Lee earlier this year and together have made the Midwest start whispering and wondering what they have up their sleeve next.  It started off with his first mix-tape “Scriptures,” and things have been looking up ever since. Scriptures is a inside look into Da Younger’s life where he tells stories of his lifestyle, survival and struggle.

Da Younger is currently working on a self entitled album called “Da Younger”.  He has been working hard on this project to ensure that the world will be moved by it.  His album is set to be released at the end of 2017. He is currently on all outlets including: iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, and more.  Check him out and if they ask which way be sure to say……. Dat way!!!!!!!!!!!

1.) Tell us about yourself and your childhood?

My name is Ryan Haynes also known as "Da Younger". I'm a recording artist, model, and overall entertainer.  I was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 13th, 1990. I was always deeply involved in church and gained a love for music at a very young age by playing the piano. I played the piano by ear, even though I never learned how to read music. Later in my childhood, my parents moved to Des Moines, Iowa where I would later graduate from Valley High School in 2009. I became serious about music when I released from prison and partnered up with my manager, Porsche Lee, who believed in me. From there, the rest is history. I released my music to the public and the fans started to follow my journey.

2.) Tell us about a challenging time in your life and what lessons you learned from it?

One challenging time in my life is when I went to prison in 2013, for a crime I did not commit. I was wrongfully persecuted because I would not speak on the incident.  After 3 years behind bars, I appealed and beat the case. They did not have enough evidence to convict me, therefore, I was a free man. During this time hard I worked on improving myself. I saw how quickly freedom could be taken away from me and I returned to society with a newfound appreciation. From that point on I became more focused than ever.

3.) What motivates you to follow and pursue your passion?

My lost brothers are my motivation. I lost many good friends and individuals close to me. I now strive to be the best I can for their families and young ones. One individual in particular that motivates me every day is my close friend Darnell “Doodie” Lee. He was killed this year and it has changed my life in a major way. “Doodie was one of the most positive individuals I knew and someone that was always in my corner, so I have to do this for him.”

4.) What advice would you give to the new up and coming artist?

To all the upcoming artists, I can only say,

“Have a plan and never ease up, and be appreciative of your support team. Without them, we are a lost cause.  It is also important to stay humble throughout the process because it can all be taken away in a blink of an eye”.

5.) Have you or how do you do you contribute to the community?

I am active in the community alongside my manager who keeps me active in many ways. I have performed and spoke to children at 1st Annual Back to School Giveaway, The Hip Hop for the Wounded Warriors Project, Biggz Big World for Breast Cancer Awareness, and many other events. I am always seeking opportunities to help the community.

6.) Who do you look up to besides your parents?

One of the individuals that I look up to is my manager, Porsche Lee, who I believe is one of the strongest people I know. She moves different and I learn from it every day. When I first met her, I thought I knew what hard work was.  But she was even harder on me and I appreciated it.  She is more than a manager, I love that lady.

7.) What are your goals for the next 5 years?

My goal is to have a fan base of a few million and to be able to give back to my community. I want to continue to grow and show my passion for music all over the world.

8.) What is your motto in life?

"A man's character is not based on how well he plans for things to go great, but how he stands up when everything goes wrong."

-Da Younger

9.) How did you find out about Made4Mankind Clothing?

I found out about Made4Mankind Clothing when I saw a young man randomly walking downtown and saw a hoodie that he had on. I gave a quick compliment and wanted to know where the young man got the hoodie from, and and it was from Made4Mankind Clothing. From there, my manager later told me all about Made4Mankind Clothing and I was on board ever since.

10.) What do you know about Made4Mankind Clothing?

I know that Made4Mankind has some of the hottest gear out in the city. They make sure that they give their customers good quality and keep them in the latest fashion.

11.) If you could do a collaboration with Made4Mankind Clothing, what kind of apparel would you choose and why? (T-shirt, Hat, Accessories, Etc.)

If I could do a collaboration with Made4Mankind Clothing, I would choose hats and accessories. Made4Mankind Clothing would definitely put a fresh take on items for the fans. If I was able to get a sponsorship, I would wear the clothes at every event.

Baby Boy Da Younger is coming into the music industry with hot beats and lyrics. Add to that a stunning stage presence, this Iowa based artist’s style is unforgettable and undeniable. The locals are digging this fresh style and only the best is yet to come. Baby Boy Da Younger has a gusto about his work that goes unmatched to others. It’s that enthusiasm that’s the platform to his success.

“Music has been in my family for quite a while, my grandfather Hollie Haynes was very musically inclined and was the best keyboard player I’ve seen. I kinda shadowed him a lot growing up. My dad Jerome Haynes was also musically inclined and had a rock group in the 70-80’s in which he used to impersonate Jimi Hendrix,” Baby Boy Da Younger mentions. All that influence began to manifest itself when he started playing the piano at 10 and has been playing by ear ever since.

Upcoming for Baby Boy Da Younger is the mixtape titled Scriptures that will drop on May 26, 2017. This past April was highlight filled as he was interviewed by Iowa Block Radio and also performed at Coast 2 Coast live in his hometown of Chicago. “My manager has been cooking up something. I can smell the food. It’s almost done. We’ve been working hard to keep pushing and promoting what we have to offer as much as possible in hopes in efforts that we continue to catch these blessings,” he adds in.
